This Week in Jerusalem

Israel has several botanical gardens, but the garden at the Mount Scopus campus of the Hebrew University is the single garden dedicated solely to the wild plants of Israel.    Established in 1931, it has grown to contain hundreds of species, including several rare plants that have almost disappeared from nature.

The garden is also of interest to history and archaeology buffs.   Burial caves dating from the Second Temple have been excavated, and more recently, two leaders of the Zionist movement, Yehuda Pinsker and Menahem. Ussishkin were buried there.

The garden, located at the northeastern end of the campus, is open to the public Sunday-Thursday, from 8 a.m. until an hour before dusk.
